Surrounding Area
In the immediate vicinity (2 minute drive or a scenic walk from Casa Leo) is the charming town of Monteleone d'Orvieto. Quiet and beautiful, it sets the tone for life in the Italian countryside. The town has 2 caffés with good pastries and home made ice cream, 2 good restaurants that specialize in typical regional dishes, a small supermarket, a bank, a pharmacy and a butcher. Several other towns are located a short drive away, all providing excellent dining opportunities, historic locations, and the necessary amenities for your stay.
Perched on a rock overlooking the valley of the Chiana, Monteleone d'Orvieto was founded in 1052 as a castle guarding Orvieto's northern boundaries. In 1643, during the War of Castro fought between Pope Urban VIII and the house of Farnese, Monteleone was besieged and partly destroyed by the troops of Florence. Today the town is a sleepy Umbrian jewel of 1500 people.
Citta’ della Pieve (15 minute drive):A regional center that in recent years has become a vibrant go-to place for good restaurants and shops in the area. Its history is rich and tied to the Etruscan civilization in ancient times and to the city of Perugia in the past few centuries. The town has all you need from supermarkets to ice cream shops, cafes, boutiques and is famous for its production of Saffron as well as wine and olive oil. Always very lively with people strolling especially in the late afternoon and at night, it is as charming as it gets in terms of small Umbrian towns.
Fabro Scalo (10 minute drive): A rural community that has developed into a small commercial center. It hosts the Fabro-Ficulle train station, a good supermarket, and all else you might need for your shopping needs. Fabro is the closest entry point to the A1 Highway.
Chiusi (30 minute drive): Like Citta’ della Pieve, this is a regional center with plenty of good shops, a train station, and an A1 highway exit. Chiusi has one of the best Etruscan art museums in the area. The old town center is wonderfully restored and full of charm. It is worth making a stop at the city markets for fresh produce, local delicacies and artifacts.
Activities
The surrounding area offers opportunities for a wide range of activities, including tennis and horseback riding in the immediate vicinity, swimming and water sports in the Bolsena and Trasimeno lakes, golf near Panicale and Perrugia, and famous spas in San Casciano dei Bagni.
